What is Class Width in Statistics?
The class width is the difference between the upper and lower boundaries of a class. It determines the range of values that are included in each class.
Class Width Formula
The formula for calculating the class width:
Class Width = Range of Data / n
- Range of Data = The difference between the maximum and minimum values in the dataset = Maximum value – Minimum values
- n = Number of classes
How to calculate class width?
To calculate the class width for a datasets, you can follow these steps:
Step1 – Find the Range of the Data = Maximum value – Minimum value
Step2 – Determine the Number of Classes = n
Step3 – put all values in formula = Range of data / n
Solved Problem
Example- A dataset of exam scores for a class of students:
62, 75, 82, 88, 95, 67, 72, 90, 78, 85, 93, 68, 75, 80, 87, 92, 76, 81, 89, 94
Given,
Maximum value = 95, Minimum value = 62
Range of data = Maximum number – Minimum number = 95 – 62 = 33
Number of classes = n = 5 (let)
Class width = Range of data/number of classes = 33 / 5 = 6.6
