Free online DPI screen calculator – Calculate dpi/ppi; Enter diagonal screen size, horizontal resolution, and vertical resolution, then click calculate button.
What Is DPI?
DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. When discussing digital displays, the more technically accurate term is usually PPI (Pixels Per Inch). It describes how many pixels are packed into one physical inch of a screen.
A higher DPI or PPI generally means a sharper and more detailed image because more pixels are packed into the same physical area.
How to Calculate Screen DPI?
To calculate the DPI of a display, you need its horizontal resolution, vertical resolution, physical width and physical height.
DPI = √(Horizontal² + Vertical²) ÷ √(Width² + Height²)
Example
Suppose a monitor has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 and a physical size of 24 inches diagonally.
The diagonal resolution is approximately 2202 pixels. Dividing that by 24 inches gives approximately:
DPI ≈ 91.79 PPI

DPI vs PPI
DPI and PPI are often used interchangeably, but they technically refer to different things.
- PPI: Pixels Per Inch, normally used for displays.
- DPI: Dots Per Inch, commonly associated with printers and physical output.
Common Screen DPI Examples
| Display | Resolution | Approx. DPI |
|---|---|---|
| 24″ Monitor | 1920 × 1080 | 91.8 PPI |
| 27″ Monitor | 2560 × 1440 | 108.8 PPI |
| 27″ 4K Monitor | 3840 × 2160 | 163.2 PPI |
| 32″ 4K Monitor | 3840 × 2160 | 137.7 PPI |
